Women's A Cappella Christmas Chorus

Christmas chorus is going very well, with around 120 registrants joining with Brindabella Chorus to make a massed chorus!

More information about Christmas Chorus

In recent years Brindabella Chorus has begun a tradition of hosting the Women's A Cappella Christmas Chorus, where we invite members of the community to join us for six weeks. We learn 8-10 Christmas Carols and then perform these at a major community event.

It's a great opportunity to sing for a short period if you cant commit to a full time chorus, or to come along and see what Brindabella Chorus is all about.

In past years we have had between 100 and 200 registrants for this event!

When and where?

When? Wednesday evenings 4 November - 9 December, 7.30pm - 9.00pm

Where? Weston Uniting Church Hall, Parkinson St, Weston (next to the childcare centre, between the Irish Club and Cooleman Court).

The performance! War Memorial Carols by Candlelight, Friday evening 11 December. This event usually attracts an audience of around 9000 people.

How much? Your registration fee of just $40 includes 6 rehearsals, hire of sheet music and access to learning tracks either online or on CD.

Frequently asked questions

The answers to these questions are available below. Scroll down to see the answers:

I've never sung in a choir before, can I join?

You don't need to have any particular singing experience; you just need to be able to carry a tune.

If you're really new to singing, it's often a good idea to identify someone else singing your part who is more confident or experienced, and stand close to them. Hearing another singer really helps.

Can I bring a friend?

Yes! In fact we'd love you to. Bring lots of friends...the more the merrier. Your friend will need to register too, but you can register more than one person at a time.

If you don't bring a friend, don't worry - you'll probably make some new ones.

Do I have to be able to read music?

No! In addition to sheet music, every participant can either download learning tracks from our website or receive a learning CD. The learning tracks will help you learn even if you have no singing experience. We encourage all participants to listen to the learning tracks even if they are really good sight readers.

Is there an age limit?

All ages are welcome, so long as they are able to participate fully. Young members should be old enough to maintain concentration for the full 90 minute rehearsal. Members under 15 years old must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

We usually stand for most of the rehearsal, but older participants or people with disabilities or injuries are welcome to use a chair if required.

What if I can't come to every rehearsal?

Christmas is a busy time of year, and sometimes you just can't make it every week. If you miss a week, you should contact christmaschorus@brindabellachorus.org.au and find out what you missed so that you can listen to those songs on your learning CD. There is generally no refund or reduction of fees if you are unable to attend.

What if I can't make the final performance?

You're still welcome to come along and participate. Although we work towards the final performance, a lot of the satisfaction comes from the experience of singing in a large group at rehearsal.

Can I use my sheet music at the performance?

Usually Brindabella Chorus performs without sheet music. However, because we are learning so many songs in such a short period, you are welcome to use your sheet music during the performance.

What does 'a cappella' mean?

A cappella means 'unaccompanied'. We sing in four part harmony without any instruments playing. We use a 'pitchpipe' to play a note so that we all know where to start, and then we're on our own!

Is there a costume?

Yes! The essentials are black shoes, black pants or long black skirt and a red, white, black or green Christmas t-shirt. You can use a plain t-shirt and dress it up with tinsel or other ornaments.

Optional accessories include...anything else Christmas-y you can find. Earring, brooches, head bands, socks, bracelets, necklaces, antlers, tinsel halos, santa hats - go wild! The idea is for us to look as festive as possible.

We also encourage you to use makeup for the performance. If you're not experienced with makeup, just a little bit of lipstick will do, and there are plenty of willing volunteers to help out.

I've done Christmas Chorus before, can I come again?

Yes! We have many people who come every time. We make sure that there is at least some new music every year to keep people interested. We do tend to repeat a few songs - partly because there are limited numbers of good Christmas songs, and partly because we end up singing the more familiar songs a little better.

What songs will we sing?

We're still finalising the repertoire list. However, we usually sing a mix of traditional carols and modern Christmas songs, with a couple of Australian carols or novelty songs thrown into the mix. Something for everyone.

Can I join Brindabella Chorus when Christmas Chorus is finished?

We know that many people just want a short term singing experience, and we want to avoid making people feel pressured to join us.

However, we're aware that there are always people who love our style of singing and want to do more. Some of our best members started out in Christmas Chorus! We'll have a short information session after one of our rehearsals; anyone who wants to know more is welcome to stay behind, listen and ask questions. We'll also have a flyer available with some information about joining the chorus. We encourage anyone who is interested to come back to us in the New Year.

If you don't want to, that's OK too. There is no hard sell!
